MICHAEL STEELE CHOSEN TO HEAD THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE

Michael Steele has been chosen to be the new chairman of the Republican National Committee.  Steele is the former Lt. Gov. of Maryland and current chairman of GOPAC.  He was elected to the position after 6 rounds of voting eventually defeating the current chairman, Mike Duncan, as well as fellow challengers Ken Blackwell, Saul Anuzis and Katon Dawson. In the final round, Steele received 91 votes...more than the 85 neeeded to win.

My thoughts?  I have heard Michael on many radio and television programs.  I have checked his record and he appears to be a fairly solid conservative.  I've talked with a few conservative friends of mine from Maryland and Steele receives mainly thumbs up from them.  One of them said to me, "He's not as conservative as you, but I think you will like him in this position."  From what I've seen, I tend to agree with his assessment.  Let's face it, the party has been going down the crapper in the past several years.  The party has lurched so far to the left, that many of us have questioned whether or not we can still call ourselves Republicans.  Contrary to the liberals in the media and the Democrats, the Republican party is not in shambles because it has gone too far to the right.  The Republican party needs desperately to return to the conservative ideals that has made it successful in the past.  I am hopeful that Michael Steele can get the party back on track.  He has a LOT of work to do.  I am very optimistic, but I want to see what moves he makes before I sing his praises.

THE WILKOW MAJORITY ON XM RADIO

It's a little bit of old news.....a few weeks, but Andrew Wilkow and the Wilkow Majority can now be heard on XM radio.  His show is on 12:00 - 3:00 E.S.T. on XM America Right Channel 166 and continues to air on Sirius Patriot 144.  I thought I had already posted this because I have gotten so many emails from friends and readers and customers of ProudConservative.com who had XM subscriptions but never got to listen to Andrew until recently.  They have all been telling me that I was right and that he has a great show.  But for those of you who have not emailed me and who have XM radio.  If you have not yet found this radio talk show, you must.  It will quickly become one of your favorites.

I interviewed Andrew and I was privileged enough to get to spend the day with him.  Check out the home page for links to the interview and for my account of the day I got to visit with him.

BUSH TWINS LEAVE LETTER FOR OBAMA GIRLS

A nice letter written by Jenna and Barbara Bush to the Malia and Sasha Obama......narrated by the Bush twins. Classy gesture!

IS THAT A SPINE I SEE?

I'm shocked I tell you! SHOCKED! The House Republicans all, yes you heard that right ALL, voted against the $825 billion so-called stimulus plan that does very little stimulating. I will have more to say about the stimulus plan when I have a little more time. Unfortunately, the stimulus plan still passed....244-188. When this thing crashes and burns, it will all be on the Democrats....that is unless the Senate Republicans cave. I highly advise the House Republicans to stick to their guns, keep that spine and vote no again when it comes back up for a vote after going to the Senate. You may be vilified in the press, but you will be heralded by your base. And those Republicans that lose that spine or for those in the Senate that I can almost guarantee will never have one, you may be heralded by the media, but you most certainly will be vilified by us conservatives. And believe me, next time you are up for election, we won't forget.

By the way, if you happen to live in the district of one of the 177 Republicans and the 11 Democrats who voted against this boondoggle, send them an email. Call their office. Let them know that you support their NO vote.

HAVE SOME FUN WITH THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE

Rizzuto, the producer of the Wilkow Majority and main man behind ConservativePunk.com posted this link and I thought it was a great idea. So I decided to post it here as well. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is running a petition to get people to protest what Rush said about hoping that President Obama fails. So they are asking people to sign a petition and condone Rush's remarks. However, Rizzuto's idea was to sign the petition, but in the comments section, write something POSITIVE about what Rush said.

I sent in my comment already. I said that I hope President Obama's marxist policies will fail miserably as well. Here is the link:

RUSH TO JUDGEMENT

JUST SOME HOUSE CLEANING

I'm trying to clean up the site a little. No big major changes, just a little "house cleaning." So you may notice a few minor changes over the upcoming weeks. What kind of stuff am I talking about? For instance, I got rid of the Videos Page and the Miscellaneous Page today. It was kind of a pain in the butt to move the videos around every time I posted a new featured video. So from here on out, whenever I post a new featured video on the home page, I am going to post it here on the blog as well. This way it will always be here. As for the Miscellaneous Page, it never quite became what I had envisioned and so I quit adding to it. I finally just decided to scrap it all together.

I have a few other ideas as well. I will also be adding some new pages. I began adding the Federalist Papers for all to read. I still have a whole bunch to add. That's a little time consuming and lately, I have had next to no spare time. Eventually, they will all be added on the Documents Page.

So anyway....that's my quick little blurb on that.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS ARTICLE?

I was just reading some articles and editorials.  I came across this one with the headline:

Lobbyists skirt Obama's earmark ban

"WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's ban on earmarks in the $825 billion economic stimulus bill doesn't mean interest groups, lobbyists and lawmakers won't be able to funnel money to pet projects."

The rest of this article can be found HERE:

I only needed to quote the very first line to ask my question.  What's wrong with this article?  The answer?  The entire $825 billion economic stimulus bill IS an earmark!  It's nothing but pork spending on mostly wasteful projects and more bailouts.

Instead of stimulating the economy by spending more of our money....or actually borrowing more money that we will one day need to pay back, just let us keep more of our money in the first place.  We will spend it.  We will stimulate the economy.  We will decide the winners and losers in the market.  The purpose of the government getting involved is solely to usurp more power and control.  If they would just get out of the way, the economy would straighten itself out.  This New Deal 2.0 is going to end up being as much of if not more of a disaster than the first one.  And make no mistake about it.....the New Deal did more harm than good for this nation.

A FEW DAYS IN NOW...WHAT ARE OBAMA'S PRIORITIES?

Barack Obama has been President for 3 1/2 days so far. So let's check in and see what his priorities have been.

Ahhhh yes.  He has ended being able to effectively interrogate terrorists.  He has signed an executive order to close Guantanamo Bay within a year....without any solid plans on what to do with the scum that are being held there.  Better yet, he has halted any and all trials against all of the terrorists.  I feel so much safer with Obama in charge...don't you?

What else?  Oh yeah.  He has ended the ban on federal funding of international organizations that promote and provide abortions.  So in his view....it's inhumane to pretend to drown a terrorist that has vital information that may save thousands of lives....even though there is no actual physical harm done.  But killing unborn babies is perfectly fine.  And let the American taxpayer pay for it....for foreign organizations!  It's not as if we have any sort of financial problems here at home.  This is BRILLIANT!

How are those cabinet appointments going?  No problems there.  Everyone he has appointed has been squeaky clean without any conflicts or moral issues whatsoever. There is no way he'd appoint a Treasury secretary, who would be head of the I.R.S. , that failed to pay over $30,000 in taxes.  He would never appoint a Secretary of State that had a husband who was accepting millions and millions of dollars from foreign governments for his foundation.  Surely, he wouldn't even think of nominating an Attorney General who pressed for and worked towards getting terrorists pardons.  Nah...never happen.

Well at least he has been completely open with the press corps....allowing them to ask him any questions they'd like.  He would never say anything like, "Ahh, see.  I came down here to visit. See this is what happens. I can't end up visiting with you guys and shaking hands if I'm going to get grilled every time I come down here."  He'd never do that.

For those of you that voted for change....you got it!  And just think.....he's only just begun!

TO THE ANNOYING LIB TOO AFRAID TO LEAVE HIS EMAIL ADDRESS

I received yet another cowardly email from a lib who went on and on about how rotten of a person I was. This person told me all about how they were so much smarter than I was. This twirp made so many assumptions about me and the way I grew up that were so utterly and completely false, yet failed to give me his/her email address so that I could answer the email. This happens all the time by the way. So Mr. or Mrs. "Someone Smarter Than You" if you would like me to answer your email, you're going to have to send me your email address.

But because I am such a nice guy, I will actually answer the last question you sent me and post it on my blog as you requested. You asked, "I'm interested in knowing how many people actually buy that crap of yours. Could you put it in your blog or something?" The answer to your question, is that I have received orders from 48 states, Washington D.C., Canada and Norway. The two states that I have yet to receive an order from so far? Hawaii and Deleware.....Obama's and Biden's states!

UPDATE: I received an order from the state of Delaware today! So it's just a Hawaiin order I am waiting for now.

OBAMA SUPPORTERS TRASH D.C.

I thought that the liberals who support President Obama were supporters of the environment.  Look at the condition they left the lawn in D.C. after Obama's inauguration. You would think that $170,000,000.00 would buy a few trash cans and garbage bags.  You would think that those who are supposedly so concerned with the environment would keep the environment clean.

FREE AT LAST! RAMOS'S AND COMPEAN'S SENTENCES COMMUTED!

President Bush has commuted the sentences of border agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. Personally, I think he should have done this a long time ago and he should actually take it the one step further and pardon them.

The two border agents were simply doing their job and doing their best to keep this nation safe from illegal invaders. The illegal invader they shot was a sleazy drug dealer. Ramos and Compean deserved to be praised. Instead they were locked up in a prison. The whole ordeal was an absolute disgrace. Thankfully, President Bush got it right....even if it was long overdo.

OBAMA PICKS SOCIALIST TO BE "GLOBAL WARMING CZAR"

Carol M. Browner was chosen by President-elect Barack Obama's to be the nation's "global warming czar," whatever that is.   Browner believes that the most effective and prosperous nations on Earth must purposely sabotage their economies to fight the global hoax of climate change.  Not only that, but she is also one of the 14 leaders of a socialist group's Commission for a Sustainable World Society.

Does this actually surprise anyone?  If it does then you simply have not been paying attention.

THE HOUSING CRISIS SUMMED UP

I know this is a bit of old news, but it is still relevant. And I continue to get e-mails asking me what I think about how it happened. I've listened to various pundits and talk show hosts. I've done my own research and I've asked the opinions of a few people I know in the industry. The following is the best I can describe what happened and why.  This is a very basic explanation, but enough to give you an idea of the events that led up to the meltdown.  If you need a more detailed explanation.....just do a little research.  There is tons of information on the web.

It all began back during the Carter administration with the Community Re-investment Act.  The government decided it was going to tell the banks who they had to loan money to in order to try revive the decaying cities.  The original intent was to get more low income people to become home owners.  A lofty goal, but perhaps not a wise one.  (And by the way, this is not really a discussion of whether the government should be doing any of this anyway, because most of you know my thoughts on that.  If it's not in the Constitution, the federal government should not be doing it.  Fact is they did it and that is what I am discussing here.)  Throughout the late 70's, the 80's and the early 90's, there was not a whole lot of damage nor a whole lot of good done by the CRA.  It did however lay the foundation for what would happen in the mid to late 90's and 2000's.

Under Clinton the CRA was expanded.  The government really got more involved and regulated the banks into making loans to people who did not qualify for loans.  They were required to make risky loans their normal standards would stop them from making.  Again, the goal was to get more people to own homes.  The problem is, many of these people couldn't afford to own homes so in the end it really wasn't such a good deal for them.  Yes, they were technically home owners for a short time, but in the end many of them ended up in bankruptcy and foreclosures.  If you ask me, I'd rather rent until I could actually afford a home rather than own a home and be forced into bankruptcy....but hey that's me.

These practices went on for years.  The default rate shot up as everyone knew it would, but politics being politics, the politicians were more concerned with being re-elected so the regulations on the banking and lending institutions stayed in place.  The politicians could claim that under their watch, there were more home owners.

As time went on, the government decided in order to keep the practice going, it was going to have the quasi-federal agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guarantee the loans that the banks and other lending institutions were making.  This opened a whole new can of worms and is really where the crisis was formed.

With the government in effect guaranteeing these loans, the banks and mortgage companies felt the practice of making these risky loans was no longer so much of a risk for them as the loans were now essentially backed by the federal government.  They were free to make loans to people that couldn't afford them with very little risk to their own balance sheets.  If the people couldn't afford to make their mortgage payments, the banks could just sell those mortgages to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  And that's exactly what they did in huge numbers.  But wait that's only part of it.

With more people "qualifying" for mortgages, there were was a larger pool of home buyers.  What happens when demand outpaces supply?  You got it, the price goes up.  So now instead of 2,000,000 people looking to buy a home out of 2,500,000 homes on the market, there were 3,000,000 people looking to buy those same 2,500,000 homes.  (These numbers aren't the actual numbers.....simply numbers to explain what was happening.)  The law of supply and demand kicks in and those 2,500,000 homes go up in price.  So now instead of a home selling for $250,000.00,  it goes on the market for $300,000.00.  And as the cycle continues with more and more people getting these loans, that $300,000.00 house now becomes a $375,000.00 home.  So now you have people who originally may have bought a $250,000.00 buying homes that cost $375,000.00.  This process continued and spiraled out of control.  Can anyone say housing bubble?

So now there are more and more people buying homes they really can't afford and they are paying much more for them.  The banks and lending institutions are making these loans knowing they can just "bundle" all these risky mortgages and sell them to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  Sooner or later Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would hit the toppling point where these bad loans were hitting unprecedented default rates and these two agencies simply could no longer stay afloat.  It was a recipe for disaster.

In comes the federal government once again to "save" everyone with a bailout.  They came in to save everyone from a problem they created.  If they had kept their noses out of the banks' business, this crisis simply would never have happened.  The banks would have continued to makes loans based upon standards that would minimize their risk and maximize their profits.  People who could afford to get loans would get them and those not ready to buy homes financially, would be denied the loans....saving them from future misery.

Now I just want to discuss the blame on this issue.  I have heard a lot of excuses and explanations from a lot of liberals and even from some conservatives.  Many people blamed the lending institutions for being greedy.  They claim they caused the entire crisis.  I, myself, blamed the people for taking out loans they knew they couldn't afford.  And to a high degree, I still stand by that.  I also blamed the government for getting involved in the first place.  And I still stand by that as well.  However, I do now also place some of the blame on the lenders.  To me, the fault begins with the government mandating that the lenders make these loans by threat of fines if they do not.  The main blame falls on the people that took out mortgages to buy bigger homes than they could afford.  The government may have forced the banks to make these loans, but no one forced people to take mortgages for more money than they could afford.  So the bulk of the blame falls on these people.  As I said, I do now place a little of the blame on the lenders as well.  Yes they were mandated to make these loans by the government, BUT they took advantage of the fact that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would buy all these bad loans from them.  They came up with loan programs that only exacerbated the problems.  Again, though, the really culprit is the borrowers who took loans for more money than they could afford.  I don't care what the banks told them.  I don't care what programs the banks offered.  In the end, it was these people that signed the loans and they were not forced or mandated to do so.  I, myself, bought a home while a lot of this was going on.  I was approved for a lot more money than the mortgage I decided I was comfortable with.  I took at as my personal responsibility to take out a mortgage for an amount I felt reasonably comfortable I could repay, regardless of what the banks told me I could afford.

The one other complaint I heard was that the banks were racist and that's why the government had to get involved.  These same people would yell up and down how greedy these banks were.  So I had a simple response to that.  The main purpose of a business is to make a profit.  Call that greed, call it whatever you like, but that's fact.  Now if a business is greedy, it wants to make as much money as it possibly can right?  Well then it wouldn't matter if they were making money from white, black, brown, yellow or red people.  They would make loans that would profit their business.  The CRA had nothing to do with racism as "greedy" banks were making loans to "qualified" minorities as well as "qualified" white people.  That was their business and that's how they made money.  These same banks were also denying loans to "unqualified" minorities as well as unqualified white people.  In other words, race didn't matter.

The lesson is that when the government gets involved in issues it has no authority under the Constitution to get involved in, bad things happen.  This whole crisis would have been averted and the federal government wouldn't be once again engaging in unconstitutional activities by now bailing out these institutions and agencies.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I just wanted to take a quick moment to wish all of my friends, customers and readers a very happy and most prosperous new year. 2009 has the potential to be a rough year. We must stand strong and fight for our conservative ideals. We must reform the Republican Party and get it back to it's conservative roots. We need to get rid of the RINOs who are dragging the party to the left and thus ensuring defeat after defeat. We must get the government out of the business of picking winners and losers in our economy. We must get the government back to the role the founders envisioned.......a limited self government whose only powers are those enumerated in the Constitution. We must fight the socialism that has been encroaching year after year after year into our society. There is much to do.

So enjoy the day. Refresh yourself from last night's adventures. Let's see what we can accomplish as Proud Conservatives for this great nation of ours!

-Trent
