THE ANDREW WILKOW INTERVIEW
|
The first time I heard Andrew Wilkow on the radio
was on WABC in New York City. I was
immediately drawn to his show because of the way
he was speaking. He wasn't mincing words. He
wasn't trying to be politically correct. He was a
straight shooter that left the B.S. behind. As I
continued listening to him, I found out we had a bit
in common. We are the same age. We are
obviously both conservative and not afraid to let
people know. We have a similar taste in music and
spent our teenage years and beyond in the punk
and hardcore music scene....not common for older
conservatives. In a nutshell, I found out I wasn't the
only punk music loving, semi-young conservative
out there.
I then had the chance to meet Andrew at the 2006 Freedom Concert. I had some extremely interesting
conversations with him and found him to be a real, no-nonsense straight talking kind of guy. My impression of him
from the radio was confirmed. He was gracious to me and the rest of the fans that attended the event. I saw him
many times just hanging out and talking and taking pictures with the fans. He was humble even though he had just
signed with Sirius Satellite Radio for a 3 hour daily radio show on Sirius Patriot Channel 144.
His radio program is on Sirius Patriot 144 Monday to Friday Noon - 3 pm ET, Weekends 9 am - 12 pm ET,
Replays Monday to Friday 12 am -3 am ET. He can also be heard occasionally filling in for Mark Levin on his
show. His website there is http://sirius.com/wilkow
He took some time out of his busy schedule and answered a few quick questions for the readers of
ProudConservative.com. Below are the questions I asked him in white and his replies in black. I want to take
the time here to thank Andrew for his time and encourage everyone to sign up for Sirius radio to tune into his show
NAME:
Andrew Wilkow
AGE:
34
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INTERESTED IN POLITICS?
As soon as I started paying taxes and witnessed the first wave of political correctness.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS CONSIDERED YOURSELF A CONSERVATIVE?
No, in high school, I thought to like the music that I like (and still do) and to dress the way that I did (and still do)
you had to be a liberal and/or a democrat. But I never got along with that crowd. The conservatives at the time, to
me, seemed stiff and boring. I didn’t realize until college and the Clinton years that one had nothing to do with the
other. I found that conservatives were less concerned with my music tastes then liberals were with my beliefs.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN RADIO?
I attended a small 2 year school in upstate New York, S.U.N.Y. Delhi and they had a carrier current radio
station. That means that literally the signal goes like 2 feet and the transmitter is placed in same area as the main
campus power supply, so every electrical outlet becomes an antenna, but it doesn’t “go over the air”. The station
was run by music snobs and A.V. squad geeks. I walked in and got a show. I was always there. I ended up
becoming the program director.
NOW THAT YOU HAVE A NATIONAL SHOW ON SIRIUS RADIO, WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST
DIFFERENCES FROM YOUR EARLIER LOCAL SHOWS AND YOUR NATIONAL SHOW?
That’s the difference. On WABC and WGY all the callers were New Yorkers or at least north easterners. Now I
talk to people from all over the country. Liberals are very myopic people in that they seem to only hang out with
other liberals in liberal friendly environments. What I get now are callers who arrogantly think they’re going easily
beat me in a debate, just by virtue, that they are a liberal that took the time to call….then they lose miserably. I
base my debate on facts. They try to debate on how they feel about something. It’s fun to talk to people from San
Francisco and Seattle.
YOUR SIRIUS SHOW IS ON FROM 12:00 NOON TO 3:00. AS YOU KNOW, THAT IS THE AIR
TIME FOR RUSH LIMBAUGH’S SHOW AS WELL. WE TALKED ABOUT THIS AT THE
FREEDOM CONCERT, BUT TELL THE PEOPLE READING THIS WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS
ARE ON THIS.
Rush is Rush and I’m me. That’s no dis-respect. But, if you fear the competition stay off the field.
CONSERVATIVES HAVE DIFFERENT ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO THEM. WHAT
ARE THE TOP FOUR ISSUES THAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU AS A CONSERVATIVE?
1) The re-packaging of socialism/communism
2) The politicizing of science
3) Counter Tribalism a.k.a “we are always wrong”
4) The slow dilution of our national sovereignty
OTHER THAN YOURSELF, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RADIO TALK SHOW TO LISTEN TO?
Hannity and Levin, I love both those guys.
OUT OF THE CANDIDATES THAT HAVE ANNOUNCED SO FAR FOR THE 2008 REPUBLICAN
NOMINATION, WHO DO YOU LIKE? WHO WOULD YOU NOT WANT TO GET THE
NOMINATION? WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET THE NOMINATION WHETHER OR NOT
THEY HAVE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED?
I still have to watch the primaries unfold.
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE BIGGEST MISTAKE REPUBLICANS MAKE AS A PARTY?
The biggest is being too concerned with the critics of conservatism, the media, liberals, democrats and the elites at
the U.N.
YOU ARE ON A MISSION TO MAKE THE ANDREW WILKOW SHOW THE LARGEST SHOW
ON SIRIUS RADIO. I DON’T KNOW THE STATS, BUT I AM ASSUMING THAT RIGHT NOW
THAT HOWARD STEARN HOLDS THAT TITLE. WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO TAKE THAT
CROWN FROM HIM?
I’m going to offer up my program every day for the 3 hours I’m given. Some people come into this business like
they have something to apologize for. The most successful people in radio wouldn’t be, if when they were on the
way up they bowed down. Again if you fear the competition….stay off the field.
WHAT WOULD AN ANDREW WILKOW PRESIDENCY LOOK LIKE?
80% Scientific 20% philosophical. Precision and efficiency before feelings and emotion. I would use the power of
tax cuts to make it irresistible for companies to bring the manufacturing jobs home. The same tax policy would
make it irresistible to foreign companies to open factories here too. I would lock down the border and enforce our
immigration laws. We would uphold our sovereignty. There would push for transferring funds from welfare
programs to military benefits-healthcare-pension programs. Public housing grants would also be transferred to the
military. I would seek to end the perpetual cycle of welfare for votes. I would nominate strict constitutionalist-
traditionalist judges to the federal bench. Just for starters. Wilkow Conservatism.
WHICH POLITICIAN INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?
No one person really.
YOU ARE ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE MARK LEVIN WILL LET FILL IN FOR HIM ON HIS
SHOW. TALK ABOUT THAT:
There is a trust there. My first ever talk radio job was as his fill-in when he was just on Sundays.
YOUR MOTTO OR SLOGAN IS “THE NEXT GENERATION OF GREAT TALK RADIO.” WHAT
DOES THIS MEAN?
Most people in radio and TV are trying to be “hip” or “cool” or whatever. That usually means appealing to a
young demographic. The demo for active music formats is 18-34. Most people don’t start paying attention to
politics and issues until about 35. That’s most people, not the political junkies like me (and you).
I’m not trying to hang onto “cool”. I’d rather be the up and coming younger guy in an older man’s game than the
older guy trying to hold on in a younger man’s game. The whole “Next Generation” thing came from Hannity or
Levin….I forget which. I think it was Levin.
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO PLUG?
My favorite watering hole www.redrockwest.com The owner is on the team, rare for NYC.
A new favorite band? Manda and the Marbles www.mandaandthemarbles.com
WHAT IS ONE QUESTION YOU WERE HOPING THAT I’D ASK THAT I DIDN’T ASK? NOW
GO AHEAD AND ANSWER THAT QUESTION.

get.
